SPEAKER NIGHT WITH NIKHIL BAHL – TECHNIQUES FOR CREATING DYNAMIC IMAGES

Nikhil Bail

While a great light display can lead to attractive images, a good photographer does not rely on great light to create compelling images. From capturing energy and motion to the serene and surreal, Nikhil will talk about techniques and ideas that you can use to create dynamic images. Nikhil will also give you insights into how and when these techniques are best applied.

Nikhil Bahl is a full time professional photographer, author, educator, workshop instructor and environmentalist residing in the Washington D.C. area. Drawing continuous inspiration from nature, Nikhil adopts novel approaches and seeks meaningful interpretations: to create photographs that transcend the commonplace, reflect deeper insights, and convey an enchantment of the subject’s beauty.

(Read more and see some of Nikhil’s images.)

COMPETITION COLUMN

Our October topic is Nature.

Acceptable entries are photographs that portray various aspects of natural plant and animal life; that illustrate the natural features of land, sea, and sky; or that reveal natural phenomena.  No image in this competition may show human intervention. (One important detail – In order to participate in the competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)

THANK YOU TO WILL RABINOVICH AND MARK PASTNER

Will and Mark redesigned the club’s website’s navigation to make it more rational, remove repeated links and easier to use! Apparently the way that you change the navigation in WordPress is quite hard and time consuming, so this was not a project for the faint-hearted. So we should be extra grateful for their work and give them a round of applause.

FIELD TRIP TO MARYLAND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

Labor Day represents two things to the Silver Spring Camera Club: first, the next season of speakers, competitions and photo forum is soon to begin, and second, it is also the day that the Renaissance Festival welcomes “seasoned guests” and admits us free of charge.  The weather was dodgy this year, but it did not stop everyone from having fun.  Great photo opportunities were everywhere. A few images from the day are below.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

by Bruce Schaefer

Twenty-six of us assembled at the picnic shelter on a warm September Saturday and caught up on life since the end of spring and, for some, the beginning of the pandemic. Everyone has been vaxed and boosted – and has caught Covid anyway. And is easing into something approaching normal.

Conversation covered the beat. Dennis and BJ Freeman recalled hair-raising moments 4-wheeling on the Outer Banks. David and Karen Blass sent regrets from Iceland, so we talked about them. Sometimes talk involved photography. Dave Powell told stories behind his photos from Afghanistan, which were on display. Pete Morton told, when he sets off on a photo excursion, how he chooses from his 5 cameras and 21 lenses. None topped the van Rijn couple who just returned from 6 weeks rambling in a Range Rover across the game parks of South Africa; they had pics of the Big 5 to prove it. (Lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes and buffaloes. And bears. Big 6.)

Kids and grandkids also got mentions thru the day, as did pets, restos, tv series to watch, and life-by-Zoom.

This was our 3rd get-together at the Georgian Forest site, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It will no doubt be repeated again when the weather warms up again. Which, at the rate climate is changing, probably means in January.

Maude Svensson ~ Rowing Boat

I spend most of the summers at Blidö which is an island in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden. On the island, I look for wooden boats to photograph, but every year it is harder and harder to find them. Most boat owners nowadays prefer plastic or aluminum boats that are less demanding to maintain and keep in good condition. Last summer, I was happy to find a large and exclusive wooden sailing boat taking off from the docks at Kalviken. Coincidentally, at the same time, I noticed this lovely and less prestigious rowing boat moored at a small dock further away. When approaching the rowing boat, the sunset increased in intensity, and I decided to focus on the shared reflections from the sunset and the boat. As always, when enjoying the slow and protracted sunsets of the Baltic Sea, my heart was filled with gratitude for the blessings of a simple and natural life.

NOVICE PROJECTED

2nd Place: Ilona Linnoila ~ Passing an Iceberg
3rd Place: Will Rabinovich ~ Shenandoah Sunset

This photo was taken at the July 4, 2021 Capitol Hill parade. I entered this image cropped differently in the March 2022 competition, where it did not receive a prize or honorable mention. The judge recommended a tighter crop, which I tried and liked. It definitely got more attention this time around, and I'm grateful to the March judge for the recommendations.

COURSES, CALLS FOR ENTRY, AND EXHIBITS

PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES AND WORKSHOPS

Needed: Someone to author the Classes and Workshop List for the 2022-2023 Cable Release club year. Please let Catherine [ president@ssccphotography.org ] know if you might be interested. This is an opportunity to inspire the learning of club members. In the meantime, we will show some online sources.

Here are some online sources:

Also offering free webinars—on photography printing—is Moab Paper. See: https://www.moabpaper.com/moab-tv?rq=tv I have never taken one of Moab’s webinars, but Moab is a main producer of artistic photo papers. Other vendors are offering free webinars, but they tend not to give advance notice, so the ones I have located are offered only in April.

Please let us know of other online opportunities you discover by emailing us at cablereleaseeditor@ssccphotography.org.

EXHIBITS AND EVENTS

From Afar.com: The saying goes that good things come in threes, but four good things are coming to Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery this year. Over the course of the summer and fall, the museum will show four new exhibits that examine what it means to be an American today.

Already closed is I Dream a WorldSelections from Brian Lanker’s Portraits of Remarkable Black Women, a selection of portraits of contemporary Black American women who’ve shaped the country with their work in the arts, literature, activism, and politics. Next up, One Life: Maya Lin takes a biographical look at the award-winning Asian American architect behind D.C.’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial (September 30–April 16, 2023). Kinship, which features more than 40 works by eight U.S. photographers, explores the interpersonal relationships that bind us (October 28–January 27, 2024). And slated to debut November 10 is Portrait of a Nation: 2022 Honorees, which pays respect to seven notable Americans who have made a significant impact on the country in the past year.

Together, the four exhibits create a poignant representation of the ever-evolving, modern American identity and the commonalities that unite us—a powerful balm in today’s divisive times. Because the gallery is a Smithsonian institution, admission is free and tickets are not required.
