SPEAKER NIGHT WITH JOE NEWMAN – TRANSITION: THE END OF AN UNPRESIDENTED FOUR YEARS
The Silver Spring Camera Club is pleased to welcome, Joe Newman, who will discuss his new photo book, Transition: The End of an UnPresidented Four Years. It documents what was happening in the streets of the nation’s capital during the tumultuous last few months of the Trump administration. Joe edited and curated the book, which includes the work of 37 photographers. He will talk about how he selected the final 122 images from the thousands submitted during an open call and the critical step of sequencing the images as part of the storytelling process. He will also share some insight into photo book publishing.

COMPETITION COLUMN
Our October topic is Nature.
Acceptable entries are photographs that portray various aspects of natural plant and animal life; that illustrate the natural features of land, sea, and sky; or that reveal natural phenomena. No image in this competition may show human intervention. Domestic plants (e.g., in a botanical garden) or animals (including zoo animals) may be included as long as they do not show any human intervention (e.g., collars or ear tags, gates, walls, paths, signage).
Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition. The images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight on Thursday, October 7. (One important detail – In order to participate in the competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)

LORI LANKFORD – JUDGE – OCTOBER 14 NATURE COMPETITION
Lori Lankford is an established nature photographer, digital artist, and instructor. Her passion for photography began as a way to capture her travel adventures. Over the years, she dived into the fine details of macro and flower photography. She loves to escape so deeply into the details of a tiny object. Lori spends her free time in local gardens across the country, shooting in the natural light and capturing its beauty. Lori’s work is exhibited in local and national gallery exhibits, printed calendars, magazine publications, and catalogs. Lori has a love for teaching and sharing her passion for nature and creative photography. She leads workshops in the Virginia/DC area. PHOTO FORUM
Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 7:30 p.m. – after 9:00 p.m.
“Photo Forum” is our monthly opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations on a wide variety of photographic topics.
This is an online event. We will meet using Zoom – look for the meeting link in an email and via Meetup.
Open Forum Discussions: Half an hour will be an open forum discussing your photography thoughts:
- What’s on your mind?
- “If you did a summer photography project, what was it?”

The topic is “Your favorite photo NOT entered in a contest and why.” You can instead send anything else you want! We will have two breakout rooms:
- Image Evaluation – hosted by David Powell: Send up to 3 jpg images of up to 1 MB size. Or,
- Image Post Processing (Lightroom and Photoshop) – hosted by Pete Morton: Send 1 image only.
Identify which room you want to be in and send your images to Dennis Freeman before 5:00 p.m., WEDNESDAY, Oct. 20 (dennisfreeman4510@msn.com). We need them the day before the meeting for sorting and distribution.
This is expected to be a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics can be wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of shows, photo gear, software, etc.

For the 2021 season, the Club is continuing its tradition while trying to adjust for life under COVID. In order to ensure the safety of members, the following COVID Rules have been implemented for all Field Trips:

FIELD TRIP — SULTANA DOWNRIGGING FESTIVAL
Date & Time: Saturday, October 30th. Be there at 9:00 a.m. It’s a long drive and parking is limited. Meet at the Marina Entrance.
Admission is $35; Go to the Website https://downrigging.org to purchase in advance .
Limited tickets to actually sail on the boats ARE available for Fees of $40-60 and up.
Location: Chestertown Marina, 207 South Water Street, Chestertown, MD 21620. Note: Most events (and the boats) are held at the Chestertown Marina. Additional events are held throughout the Town of Chestertown. Parking is available on the street and in several marked public parking lots.
To do: Photograph Tall Ships, small ships, canoes with sails, motorboats. Also a Music Festival and old town scenery.
To eat: Massive amount/variety of food available. No food allowed in. Don’t worry, you will gain five pounds eating there. If you can swim, don’t get seasick, and can afford it, sailing on the ships offers adventure and a chance for some awesome Pics!

The Club is not arranging carpools due to COVID.
Attendees to trip must wear masks and sign attached COVID Waiver

There are crowds, but try to practice social distancing and keep your mask on. OVERNIGHT OPTION: Festival starts Friday, and Tall Ships (illuminated) available for photography Friday night. - Cross Bay Bridge, continue across Kent Island.
- Stay on 301 when Rte. 50 branches off.
- After 5.8 miles, merge onto MD 213 toward Centreville.
- After 18.1 miles, turn left onto N. Queen St. (Just past N. Water St.; if you reach N. Cross St. you’ve gone too far.)
- After 0.2 miles, second left onto Cannon St. (Cannon St is just past High St. If you reach the end of S. Queen St you’ve gone about 0.1 miles too far.)

AUTUMN SOCIAL! – SAT OCT 23 – NEW
Yes! After 18 months of home confinement and Zoom meetings, your Camera Club is about to meet again in person – for a picnic!
It’s too soon to meet safely indoors yet, so we’ve reserved a shelter for an outdoor get-together – a place to reconnect with old friends, meet our new members, show off the new camera, and shoot the breeze with live people!

We will supply cups, plates, napkins and utensils. We will also provide soft drinks, munchies and snacks. If you feel like bringing edibles for yourself or to share, terrific – they are welcome. Some folk may wish to bring quad chairs, as the picnic benches have no back support.
We have a picnic SHELTER so we can celebrate RAIN OR SHINE! Just dress a little warmer if it looks rainy.

HOW TO SHOOT THE PALOUSE (OR BROWSE THE PALOWSE)

We dared the pandemic to fly out to WA in August 2021. The proximate cause was a wedding in Seattle; we extended the trip to spend 2 days exploring The Palouse and another 2 cruising Coeur d’Alene and nearby Wallace ID. . . Driving randomly between these spots, we stumbled upon all sorts of old trucks, collapsed buildings, contrasty fields of gold and green, hay bales, small towns featuring Richfield gas stations and flag-themed murals. Serendipitous images are guaranteed.

OPEN COMPETITION – SEPTEMBER 9, 2021
September’s competition was was Open for projected images only. Jeanine Cummins was our judge that evening. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the competition was held remotely using the Zoom tool.
There were two categories judged: Advanced Projected (i.e. digital images) and Novice Projected. No Beginner Projected images were submitted. The Print categories are suspended until we start in-person meetings again. Awards are given for first, second, and third place, and multiple honorable mentions (HM) – the number of awards depends on the total number of entries in the category.

We go up to Intercourse PA once a year or so and wander the side roads shooting the horse buggies, clothes lines, and general Americana epitomized by the Amish. When we spotted these kids, we stopped the car and shot from a distance – and promptly forgot about them. It wasn't until a year later that I noticed what a precious moment of innocence had been captured. I loved how her foot was fully extended here – peak tension – and all the feet are in parallel. The other pictures we caught were not so fortunate.

Other vendors are offering free webinars, but they tend not to give advance notice, so the ones I have located are offered only in April.

Man Ray exhibit in Richmond VA October 30, 2021 – February 21, 2022
Organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and curated by Michael Taylor, VMFA’s Chief Curator and Deputy Director for Art and Education, Man Ray: The Paris Years is timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Man Ray’s arrival in the French capital. The exhibition includes more than 100 portraits of such cultural luminaries as Kay Boyle, André Breton, Jean Cocteau, Marcel Duchamp, Ernest Hemingway, Miriam Hopkins, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, Méret Oppenheim, Pablo Picasso, Alice Prin (Kiki de Montparnasse), Elsa Schiaparelli, Erik Satie, and Gertrude Stein.
