MEETINGS AND FIELD TRIPS
MEETING LOCATION
For the 2023-2024 club year, the second Thursday meeting of each month will be in person, at Northwood Presbyterian Church (https://www.northwoodchurch.com/). The address is 1200 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, Other meetings will be on Zoom. The in-person meeting will be Competition Night if the judge agrees, otherwise it will be Photo Forum and Competition Night will move to the third Thursday on Zoom.
SPEAKER NIGHT WITH DON ROSENBERGER — ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY
Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.
ABSTRACT: By creative use of shutter speeds and camera motion we can create an entire new body of work. Abstract photography allows us to depart from reality and create works that are more expressive. We will examine the origins of this form of art and how we can incorporate this art form into our photography.
BIOGRAPHY: I started taking pictures in the mid to late 1970s as a teenager. I developed my own black and white film and really enjoyed photography, but never quite found my calling. By the time I was in my mid-twenties the expense of photography got to be too much and I stopped taking pictures. Several years later I sold all my cameras and lenses since I had not used them. During this dry period, I still had an appreciation for photography, but never felt compelled to pick up a camera.
By the time I was in my early forties, I started using digital photography for my day job and as the technology improved I started wondering if it was time to get back into photography. I first purchased a small handheld camera to see how it would go. I fell back in love with photography and the next step was to purchase a DSLR and some interchangeable lenses. This time around I was mostly drawn to landscape photography. I say mostly because I attended a flash workshop that Penn Camera hosted for Nikon Pro Joe McNally. Joe’s work was so amazing and while I continued to focus on landscape photography, I still maintained a distant desire to make images of people.
I joined a couple of camera clubs, meeting a lot of amazing photographers along the way. Some of whom I still consider mentors today.
What has been my driving passion since picking up a DSLR was the desire to improve my craft. You could call this passion, but it’s more than that. I’m always interested in how to elevate the quality of my work and I believe if this ever stops, I’ll stop growing as an artist.
As the years progressed I started arranging trips with my photo friends. This turned into co-founding Road Runner Photography Tours in 2013. Road Runner has been an amazing adventure on one hand and all-consuming one on the other. After 5 years it was time to go in a different direction.
After leaving Road Runner I worked with another photographer helping to manage his international portrait workshops and also doing my own solo workshops for a few years. In 2022 I moved away from the DC area and decided it was time to stop teaching photography workshops. I’m currently taking a bit of a pause from being an active photographer while my wife and I build our retirement home. I fully expect to resume being an active photographer in the years to come.
COMPETITION COLUMN
Our May topic is Monochrome:
The term “Monochrome Photography” encompasses images that use only a single color, including the full array of shades of that color. So, for example, black and white photos, with black as the single color and its multiple shades of gray, are monochrome. Other single colors and their shades are equally acceptable. Under this definition, a sepia tone photo is acceptable, but a sepia tone photo containing a red umbrella would not qualify as a monochrome. Any subject matter is acceptable. In addition, a photo is acceptable if was originally taken as a color image, as long as the image presented for the competition has been rendered into monochrome.
Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition for the Projected competition. Look here for details on Projected submissions. Projected images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight (11:59 p.m.) on the previous Thursday. Usually, this is the day of the month’s Speaker Night.

(One important detail – In order to participate in either competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)
ED PALASZYNSKI – JUDGE – MONCHROME
Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at Northwood Presbyterian Church
Ed’s journey has taken him onto many branches of his life tree. Rooted in science as a professional researcher, he branched out to teaching and academic administration. Along the way his photography had occupied a special place that finally blossomed in later years. He enjoys experiencing the scene to determine how the light will affect shapes, tones and textures. He has recently completed a series of images for a project called “Life Forms” to answer the question, “What Does Life Look Like?”
Ed’s images have appeared and placed in national juried shows that include the Circle Gallery in Annapolis, PhotoWorks, Washington Art Works, Delaplaine Arts Center and the Allegany Arts Council. He is a Gaithersburg Camera Club Grand Master and his images have been used for online and print publications.
Ed is past President of the Gaithersburg Camera Club and has served in several Board positions. He is a member of the Maryland Federation of Art, Nature First, NANPA and is a MPA Certified Judge. He has developed and taught numerous photography classes at Montgomery College and workshops for individuals and clients of Mac Business Solutions and Capital Photography.

FIELD TRIP – JUNE – Reading WWII Air Show Weekend
Reading Regional Airport, Reading Pa.
Admission $35 per day; Go to the Website to purchase in advance.
Limited tickets to ride in planes available, but very expensive– $400+.
Date & Time: Event Runs Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9.
Two Meeting Times:
- Friday at 1.00 for those who are staying overnight; or
- Saturday. Meet at 10.00. [event opens at 8.30].
Notes. Meet at Gate. Large crowd so parking is limited.
It’s about 3.5-hour drive.
If staying overnight, book a hotel soon; they fill up quickly.
Location: Reading Regional Airport. Use GPS to get there.
To Photograph WWII Planes, on exhibit and in an Air Show; There are also WWII Exhibits and vehicles, Music and other events.
The Air Show is primarily WWII aircraft; it is a magnificent photo opportunity and a chance to practice panning.
TO EAT: Massive amount/variety of food available.
The Club is not arranging carpools; However, Leader is open to another passenger who is staying overnight and art the same or a nearby hotel.

YEAR END COMPETITION ENTRY DATES AND RULES
The Year End Competition is not about selecting the best entries for a single month, but rather selecting the best entries from the monthly competitions for the entire club year (September 2023 through May 2024). The results will be announced at the Year End Celebration on June 13.
Send an email to SSCC Historian, Norm Bernache, at normbernache@comcast.net if you would like a list of all of your print and projected images submitted from September 2023 to April 2024.
As in other competitions, the judge will select first, second, and third place winners, and as many honorable mentions as the number of entries requires. There are no ribbons or points awarded; however, a Best in Show award will be presented, known as the Len Tuchin Award.
Be aware of the submission deadlines in May:
End of Year Competition Entry Schedule
- Print Deadline: Thursday, May 9 – drop off at meeting; late entry option TBA

- Projected Deadline: Friday, May 10 (midnight) – via email
Each member may submit up to 5 projected and 5 print images from those that s/he entered in monthly club competitions this 2023-2024 season. Eligible submissions need not have won an award in the monthly competition(s) in which they were submitted. But please remember — images submitted for the year-end competition must be identical to those submitted in the regular season competitions and entries must be submitted in the same categories (print or projected) in which they were originally submitted.

ELECTION! SLATE OF SSCC CANDIDATES FOR CLUB YEAR 2024 – 2025

In May the club will elect our leadership for the upcoming year running from September 2024 through June 2025. The nominating committee has produced the following slate of candidates for the 7 elected positions:

CLUB SURVEY
The club survey window has closed and the results of the multiple choice questions are presented here. The answers to the open-ended questions are being shared with the respective committees. Consistently helpful and insightful suggestions and feedback were provided throughout the responses. LIGHTROOM VIRTUAL SUMMIT 2024
If anyone wants to brush up on their Adobe Lightroom skills and has some free time the week of May 20, you might be interested in the Lightroom Virtual Summit 2024.

It’s something that’s done every year with a free version, in which you have to watch classes within 24 hours of their release, and a paid version, in which you have lifetime access to the classes. This year, they have 15 photography teachers and 45 classes.
I usually check it out and, if I see one or more classes I might like, I’ll sign up for the free version. You’ll get some marketing emails as a result, but your inbox won’t overflow with them.
There’s also a Photoshop Virtual Summit in the fall.

COMPETITION RESULTS
INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT COMPETITION – APRIL 11
April’s competition was Intentional Camera Movement for projected and print images. Bidyottam Mittra was our judge.
There were not enough entries in Novice Projected and Novice Advanced, so those images were judged in the Advanced groups., Two categories were judged: Advanced Projected (i.e., digital images) and Advanced Print,. There were no Beginner entries. Awards are generally given for first, second, and third place, with the number of honorable mentions (HM) dependent on the total number of entries in the respective Advanced and Novice categories.

This photo was taken at the yearly National Clustered Spires High Wheel race in downtown Frederick, using a panning technique. The vibrant green and blue hues of the bike, coupled with the rider's support for the Donate Life cause, immediately caught my attention. I had a chance to chat with the rider afterward and discovered he was a recipient of a heart donation, which fueled his commitment to promoting organ donation. The man's parents who donated his heart so someone else could live, were also there to cheer the rider on. Canon Rf24-105mm lens, TV, 1/50 sec @ f/22, ISO 400.

A Sample Event: Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris 1900-1939 – at the The National Portrait Gallery – April 26-Feb. 23, 2025
“Through portraiture and biography, “Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900–1939” illuminates the accomplishments of sixty convention-defying women who crossed the Atlantic to pursue personal and professional aspirations in the vibrant cultural milieu of Paris. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city, these “exiles” escaped the constraints that limited them at home.”
