We will vote to fill the open Executive Council positions at our Competition Night meeting on May 9.  Each of these positions is vital to the functioning of the Club, and provides the opportunity to guide the club in the activities we enjoy.   These key positions are as follows:

• President: leads club meetings, guides club activities through the chair leaders
• Vice President: leads meetings in the absence of the president, coordinates the year-end awards event
• Secretary: takes notes at monthly board meetings, publishes the minutes
• Treasurer: maintains the financial records of the club, chairs the Finance Committee, and maintains the roster of members.
• Directors (3):advise on club activities, coordinate committees, approve expenditures

Going into May’s publication of the Cable Release we have the following slate of candidates interested in filling three of the four open Executive Council positions:  President – Catherine Honigsberg, Vice President – Open, Secretary – Maude Svensson, and Treasurer – Bruce Schaefer. 

The three serving Directors are Bob Catlett, Michael Koren, and Pete Morton (none of these positions is currently up for reelection)

We do not yet have a candidate for Vice President as of May 1. According to the Constitution and By-Laws, “[the] Vice President shall stand in for the President as required and carry out such responsibilities as the President directs.”

The person filling this role will have training (plus notes and references) available from the outgoing Vice President, Tanya Riseman, as well as help from the President and other board members.

The thought is that we may be discouraging some potential new members from joining at the tail end of the club year by charging them the above rates.  The proposal is to give new members joining after March 1 the choice of paying either

1. the reduced rates currently established for new members joining after January 31 that give them membership for the remainder of the current year, or
2. the full-year membership rates for the entire next year – basically making the end of the current year free for them.  

If approved, the proposed change would first take effect in the next club year (Sept 2019 – May 2020), and would affect only those new members joining after March 1, 2020.

 YEAR END COMPETITION ENTRY DATES AND RULES

The Year End Competition is not about selecting the best entries for a single month, but rather selecting the best entries from the monthly competitions for the entire club year (September 2018 through May 2019).  The results are announced at the Year End Celebration on June 13.

Send an email to SSCC Historian, Norm Bernache, at normbernache@comcast.net  if you would like a list of all of your print and projected images submitted from September 2018 to April 2019.

As in other competitions, the judge will select first, second, and third place winners, and as many honorable mentions as the number of entries requires. There are no ribbons or points awarded; however, a Best in Show award will be presented, known as the Len Tuchin Award.

Be aware of the submission deadlines in May:

End of Year Competition Entry Schedule

• Print Deadline:          Thursday, May 2 or May 9 – drop off at meeting
• Projected Deadline:  Friday, May 10 (midnight) – via email

Each member may submit up to 5 projected and 5 print images from those that s/he entered in monthly club competitions this 2018-2019 season. Eligible submissions need not have won an award in the monthly competition(s) in which they were submitted. But please remember — images submitted for the year-end competition must be identical to those submitted in the regular season competitions and entries must be submitted in the same categories (print or projected) in which they were originally submitted.

CHANGING THE FILE SIZE AND FILE NAME FOR SSCC COMPETITIONS – NOW FOR MAC USERS – BY DAVID TERAO 

A number of SSCC members have had difficulty in submitting images for Projected (digital) competitions that meet SSCC requirements.  The issues happen for both the file naming requirements and for file size limitations.  

In a previous articles, we discussed how to resize and rename projected-images for SSCC competitions using Adobe’s Lightroom (pg 34 of Member Handbook) and, for non-Adobe users, using a free software called Irfanview (Resize-Rename with Irfanview).  Although Lightroom may be used by both Mac and PC users, the instructions for using Irfanview could only be used by PC users. 

This tutorial is intended for those Mac users who do not use Lightroom.  The program we will use is called Preview and is Mac’s flagship OS program for editing photos (The other two Mac photo programs are Image Capture and Photos).  Preview can import photos directly from a digital camera or iPhone and is a useful tool for resizing and renaming images to meet SSCC competition requirements as well as converting images to other formats and making color correction, if necessary.
