ESSDRAS SUAREZ TO SPEAK ON “THE RESILIENCY OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT” ON MAY 2
On May 2, Essdras Suarez returns to be our speaker. Last time he spoke to us we had record attendance, and for good reason. Essdras provided us with an outstanding presentation on street photography. This time he will speak on “Being a Photojournalist: ‘The Resiliency of the Human Spirit’ “.
Essdras is a two-time Pulitzer prizewinning photojournalist. His images have been published in National Geographic, Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others. He was a staff photographer for the Boston Globe for 12 years. While there, he received national and international accolades. He has also received awards for portrait, food, product, and travel photography. (read more)
COMPETITION COLUMN
The competition on May 9 will be the Monochrome topic:
The term “Monochrome Photography” contemplates images that use only a single color, including the full array of shades of that color. So, for example, black and white photos, with black as the single color and its multiple shades of gray, are monochrome. Other single colors and their shades are equally acceptable. Under this definition, a sepia tone photo is acceptable, but a sepia tone photo containing a red umbrella would not qualify as a monochrome. Any subject matter is acceptable. In addition, a photo is acceptable if was originally taken as a color image, as long as the image presented for the competition has been rendered into monochrome.
Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected images must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on May 2, Speaker Night, at the new email address: competition@ssccphotography.org ( read more here ).
>>> Be sure to follow file naming and file size requirements as outlined and solved for you in these two articles by David Terao. The first one is for PC users, and the second is for Mac users:

A CLOSER FOCUS – MAY 16
by David W. Powell
An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations
Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand. A half hour is devoted to presentations by members. And a half hour is set aside for member image reviews.
This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc. Or bring a gadget to share.
In April we had two presentations and ran out of time to do our camera breakouts. For May we will do camera breakouts, and we will do that first! We will then do photo sharing, and finally a discussion with the remaining time:
- Camera Breakout Sessions: Bring in your camera, any accessories you want (e.g. flashes, triggers, intervalometers, … ), the manuals, and any other materials relating to their operation. We will break out onto several tables to discuss camera operations, taking advantage of the experienced users in the club. We will have a Nikon table, a Canon table, and others (e.g. Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, etc).
- Picture assignment: Bring in your monochrome photos to share and discuss. Monochrome is our competition topic for the month, but if you’d prefer to talk about something else bring in some other photos you’d like to share and discuss.
- Discussion: With any remaining time we will have a general discussion about “fill-flash”. Fill flash is a photographic technique used to brighten deep shadow areas, typically outdoors on sunny days, though the technique is useful any time the background is significantly brighter than the subject of the photograph, particularly in backlit subjects.
- Book/Gear Reviews: What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

Future topics of A Closer Focus include: compositional strength, HDR, or anything else photographic you want to bring to the table. This is an opportunity for you to provide input to the SSCC experience.
