COMPETITION COLUMN
The competition on January 10 will be the Open theme:
In open competitions, free rein is given to the choices the photographer makes in the creation of the submitted image. Images of any and all subjects or themes, created using any photographic or post-processing methods or techniques, are acceptable. The images are evaluated based upon the judge’s general assessment of their creativity, emotional and/or intellectual impact, aesthetic beauty, uniqueness of subject, and technical skill. The judge need not assign any specific weight to any single attribute of the image.
Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected images must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on January 3, Speaker Night, at the new email address: competition@ssccphotography.org ( read more here ).
>>> Be sure to follow file naming and file size requirements as outlined and solved for you in this month’s article by David Terao:

ROBB HILL TO JUDGE OPEN COMPETITION – JANUARY 10
Robb Hill combined journalism, art, and anthropology classes to create his degree in Documentary Photography in college. He went on to document stories in the Balkans, Chicago, Indiana, and Washington, D.C.
Robb also teaches workshops and classes at Photoworks in Glen Echo. He combines landscape and documentary traditions, and challenges the student as a photographer to make a series of photographs with an emotional narrative at its core. He wants the student to expand their notion of landscape photography. (read more)
A CLOSER FOCUS – JANUARY 17 CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER
by David W. Powell
An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations
Our Jan 17 Meeting has been cancelled due to weather. Montgomery County School Activities are cancelled, so we are cancelled as per our policy. This agenda will be postponed until next month: Thursday February 21.
Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand. A half hour is devoted to presentations by members. And a half hour is set aside for member image reviews.
This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc. Or bring a gadget to share.
For January we will have multiple breakout sessions tailored to your interests. We will also have discussion topics, photo sharing, and at least one gear review:
- Breakout Sessions: This month we will have 3-5 breakout sessions depending on attendance and the variety of member interests. Each breakout will have its own table, laptop computer, and member expert/facilitator. While most folks will want to work on post-processing, some of you may want to discuss your camera – say, its operation or setup. The sessions are planned to be free-flowing and highly interactive.
- For Lightroom or Photoshop projects: Bring in a thumb-drive with 3-4 images that you would like to work with. Just as examples, we could work on blending layers, sharpening, cloning, transforming the geometry of the image to make edges vertical, and many other things you are interested in.
- For camera operation/setup: Bring in your camera (and tripod, flash, etc if applicable) and instruction manual.
- Picture assignment: Bring anything you would like to discuss. These can be photos for feedback, discussion of your post-processing, your compositions, examples of new ideas you have, etc.
- Book/Gear Reviews: What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

A preview of February’s A Closer Focus meeting:
In February, bring in a sequence of photographs. The photos should “hang together” in some manner so that they represent a set of photos that you would notionally like to present as a portfolio or an exhibit of some sort. On the order of 5 – 10 photos should do it. You can bring them as prints or on a tablet. We will share and discuss how they work as a set, and how you have chosen to sequence them for best effect. See David Powell’s Let’s Get Started article this month for a discussion about this.
♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦
Future topics of A Closer Focus include: compositional strength, HDR, or anything else photographic you want to bring to the table. This is an opportunity for you to provide input to the SSCC experience.
If you would like to be on the agenda, please email me at:

JANUARY 20 FIELD TRIP TO UNION STATION IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

On Sunday, January 20, at 10:00 a.m. SSCC will go to Union Station in Washington, D.C., one of the nation’s busiest rail facilities and showcasing the Beaux Arts splendor of the early 1900’s. (read more)
CLUB NEWS
CHANGING THE FILE SIZE AND FILE NAME FOR SSCC COMPETITIONS – BY DAVID TERAO
A number of SSCC members have been submitting images for Projected (digital) competitions that do not meet SSCC requirements. The issues happen for both the file naming requirements and for file size limitations. This is creating an extra burden for managing these competition images because our digital entry manager, David Terao, ends up doing this for you. The Cable Release editor will appreciate these same file naming and file size requirements applied to copies of winning prints!
To remind you of the requirements, and to show you how to easily meet them, David has put together an article on how to resize and rename files using a free publicly available software product, IrfanView. (read more)
HELP-PORTRAIT AT A WIDER CIRCLE ON DECEMBER 8
The Silver Spring Camera Club in conjunction with The Nora School conducted the Help-Portrait event on December 8 at A Wider Circle in Silver Spring. Help-Portrait is an international organization that offers free family portraits to families that would otherwise be unable to afford a professionally produced photograph.
We met at 9 a.m. for setup, and shot from 10:00 through noon. SSCC provided two studio setups with lights. We managed the families, took the photographs, post-processed the selected photos, and provided the results to Dave Mullen for printing and delivery before Christmas. The atmosphere was very festive with families mingling, food and drinks, and even Santa! We had lunch at The Fire Station 1 Restaurant & Bar (next to the Nora School) after the shoot. Sound like a fun and worthwhile experience? Look at the article below this one for another opportunity!
HELP-PORTRAIT AT SHEPHERD’S TABLE – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON JANUARY 26
The Silver Spring Camera Club, in conjunction with The Nora School, will be participating in another Help-Portrait on January 26 at Shepherd’s Table (8106 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring). Help-Portrait is an international organization that offers free family portraits to families that would otherwise be unable to afford a professionally produced photograph. We will be working from 9 a.m. (setup) until about noon, then lunch.
What we need are photographers, lighting setups (probably just one in addition to mine), and re-touchers (in Photoshop after the shoot). I’ll take care of the printing and delivery to the clients. It’s a good opportunity for folks to play with studio lighting, posing, and Photoshop.
Please send an email to Dave Mullen at dave@nora-school.org if you are interested in helping.
Best,
Dave
NEW RESOURCES FOR SSCC MEMBERS
Here are two new resources for SSCC that are “under construction”, but are hopefully useful right now.
2019 U.S. Photography Conferences:
New member Durul Dalkanat has started a list of U.S. Photography Conferences for 2019, and is making it available for your reference and additions.
You know 2019 is here and most organizations have already released conference dates for the year, as well as workshops and expos. These include their dates, times, and locations. For seeing all these events from one point I created a repository in the Github. This is open-source – everyone can contribute to it:

Places to do Photography in the Greater Washington D.C. Metro Area
Yours truly, Cable Release Editor Dennis Freeman, occasionally blanks out when trying to think of a good place to go shooting “architecture”, or “inside when its raining or cold”, or “special stuff only in July”, or …
So, I have started a list with the intent of publishing it on the SSCC website as a resource in the near future. I have quite a number of entries (78) already, and have included their names, addresses, websites, some of the latitudes & longitudes (for either mapping or distance calculations in the future), and some of the categories that indicate what kind of shooting to expect. I haven’t even finished filling out what I have yet. (I have a separate list of billions of covered bridges in Pennsylvania – FYI) . The following isn’t the user-friendly table I have in mind. You can use your mouse to pick off data in this table (e.g. websites), and dump them into something else (e.g. browser), but I’ll have something better later.

For those that have Microsoft Excel, here is my original: Places to Photograph.xlsx
For now, I’d like to know some of your favorite locations to go shooting that I don’t have, (and either best time-of-day, best months, annual event, etc), and I’ll add them! If I need a new column for your data, let me know. Just send me an email at cablereleaseeditor@ssccphotography.org.
Just send the information that makes sense, and I’ll fill in the rest (e.g. forget doing latitudes and longitudes – I can get those quickly myself). Thanks!

PHOTO CHALLENGE: “WORDS AND IMAGES”
In past years, the Cable Release has had the recurring theme “Words and Images”, where club members send in a pairing of words and images. The idea is to use the text and the image together to create an artistic composite that is greater than the sum of the parts. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this year’s submissions!
KENT MASON TO SPEAK AT BLUE RIDGE VOYAGEURS PADDLING CLUB MEETING
The Blue Ridge Voyageurs Paddling Club will have a special speaker at their next meeting that will be of interest to boaters and photographers alike. SSCC members are encouraged to attend (see SSCC member Beth Koller with any questions).
Kent Mason spends over half of his year in West Virginia’s Alleghenies. This means he had captured places in all sorts of weather conditions—from gentle dawn to moody fog—and that he has explored nooks and crannies that most of us never knew about. He has explored the expanse of Dolly Sods as well as the Cheat River from its headwaters through the Gorge. Kent is also knowledgeable about the conservation efforts that have been necessary to protect the areas. ( wvphotographs.com )
The meeting also will give photographers a chance to interact with paddlers and find opportunities to photograph them during river running, play boating, slalom training, rescue training, and more.
The meeting will be held on Monday, January 28 at 7 p.m. The location will be the usual Clara Barton Recreation Center (7425 MacArthur Blvd., #151, Cabin John, MD 20218), followed by pizza and liquid refreshments at Ledo’s (5245 River Rd., Bethesda, MD 20816).
CALL FOR ENTRIES: NINTH ANNUAL JOSEPH MILLER ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
The Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts is announcing its ninth annual juried abstract exhibit. All interested photographers are invited to submit entries for this much anticipated spring event. The exhibition will occur May 4 – May 27, 2019.
SSCC photographers have done well in past Joseph Miller abstract exhibits – see prior year’s galleries here: Joseph Miller Abstract Photography Exhibit galleries
The deadline for submissions will be Saturday, February 23, 2019.
A detailed prospectus containing all relevant information regarding the exhibit can be found on the Northern Virginia Alliance of Camera Clubs nvacc.org/home/abstract-exhibit/
5TH ANNUAL ALLEGANY NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION – APRIL 2019
November’s SSCC judge, Martin Heavener, told us about this nearby national competition and it’s fabulous prizes: $$$. The April exhibition will be in Cumberland, Maryland. The entry deadline has been updated to February 8, 2019. For further details, read the updated announcement: ANPCE-2019-Arts-Council-Web-Announcement.pdf
A NATIONAL GALLERY SHOW OF GORDON PARKS’S EARLY YEARS
“Within just a decade, Gordon Parks (1912–2006) grew from a self-taught portrait photographer and photojournalist in Saint Paul and Chicago to a visionary professional working in New York for Ebony and Glamour, before becoming the first African American photographer at Life magazine in 1949.”
The Washington Post provides a review of the National Gallery’s show of “Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940-1950”. See the review here: a-national-gallery-show-examines-gordon-parks’s-early-years
The National Gallery’s link about the show is here: Gordon Parks: The New Tide, Early Work 1940–1950
On view in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, through February 18, 2019, the traveling exhibition provides a detailed look at Parks’s early evolution through some 150 photographs, as well as rare magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, and books.

KERNELS OF KOREN
It’s the 5th anniversary of my involvement with Meetup. I created and began organizing the iPhone Photography Group on December 23, 2013 then hosted my first Meetup event in Fells Point on January 4th, 2014. For those that don’t remember, our area was in the midst of a Polar Vortex, it was all of 22 degrees with a 10 mph wind, (9 degrees with wind chill!), when the group met in front of The Horse You Came In On Saloon. Since then I’ve hosted more than 50 additional Meetup events, all much warmer … ( read more )
LET’S GET STARTED – BY DAVID W. POWELL
Most of our photo club activity is centered around showing our images as stand-alone items in a contest to prove to ourselves and others “Boy, I’m a really good photographer”. After the contest these shots often end up in a box, pile, or digital folder not to be seen again until the year end contest or entered in another contest. Anything else: slideshow, portfolio, website, framed and hung on walls (yours or someone else’s, e.g. single photog show… in our dreams) involves grouping and sequencing our images… ( read more )
