MEETINGS AND FIELD TRIPS
MEETING LOCATION
For the 2023-2024 club year, the second Thursday meeting of each month will be in person, at Northwood Presbyterian Church (https://www.northwoodchurch.com/). The address is 1200 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, Other meetings will be on Zoom. The in-person meeting will be Competition Night if the judge agrees, otherwise it will be Photo Forum and Competition Night will move to the third Thursday on Zoom.
SPEAKER NIGHT WITH LORI A. SAUNDERS
Light Painting
Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.
Lori Saunders is a photographer in the Northern Virginia area with a passion for Light Painting — working with light to capture surreal visions from her imagination. She originally studied black and white photography at the University of Virginia and has always looked for a unique view into the everyday around us. As part of her interest in abstract photography, she began creating images with light. The first technique she learned was how to move a light source over a subject in a painting motion to illuminate it, and then discovered painting with light alone or combining light with models and still lifes. Every light painting image is unique because of the infinite ways light interacts with your tools, movements, surroundings, and camera settings.
She has presented and conducted hands-on workshops on Light Painting to photography Meetup groups and clubs and has exhibited award winning photos through Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions, Vienna Art Society, Herndon ArtSpace, The SE Center for Photography, Joe Miller Abstract Exhibits, and the Photo Art Pavilion.

COMPETITION COLUMN
Our February topic is Industrial:
The term “Industrial Photography” encompasses images that contain machinery, buildings, processes, equipment, and/or remnants thereof, that are or were involved in the manufacture of products.
Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition for the Projected competition. Look here for details on Projected submissions. Projected images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight (11:59 p.m.) on the previous Thursday. Usually, this is the day of the month’s Speaker Night.
Members may also submit up to two images meeting this definition for the Print competition. Look here (Section IV) for details on submissions. A label template for Print submissions may be found here.
(One important detail – In order to participate in either competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)
JANET LITTLE JEFFERS – JUDGE – INDUSTRIAL
Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at Northwood Presbyterian Church
Janet Jeffers is a visual artist using photography to explore intimate and abstract details in the natural and built worlds. Her photographic process is based on a practice of mindful exploration and discovery.
Jeffers received her BA from Towson University and MA in Publications Design from University of Baltimore, and worked in the fields of graphic design, interior design, and broadcasting, before committing to a full-time career as a visual artist.
Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions, including the Baltimore World Trade Center, the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, and the Hoffberger Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at PhotoPlace Gallery in Burlington, Vermont; Maryland Hall for the Arts; Jo Fleming Contemporary in Annapolis, Maryland; Y:Art in Baltimore, Maryland; and Baltimore Clayworks, amongst others. She has been featured in print and online publications, including Décor Magazine andUpstArt Magazine. Permanent installations of her work include large-scale installations such as wall and window murals, and are installed in organizations and spaces such as Pharmaceutics International, Inc., University of Maryland Medical Systems, Catholic University, Addison Row in Washington, DC, and The Juniper in Columbia, Maryland.
In addition, Jeffers is a juror and presenter for numerous photography outlets. She works from a studio in the historic Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower in Baltimore, and lives near Annapolis, Maryland. She is currently represented by Jo Fleming Contemporary in Annapolis.
PHOTO FORUM

Join us for discussion on topics including: What Makes a Great Photograph? and What do you think about a new Intermediate competition level between Novice & Advanced?
February’s planned presentations:
- Polar Bear Photography” by Steve Harvey
- Color Grading in Lightroom; It’s White Balance on Steroids” by Tanya Riseman The Color Grading panel can be used to produce monochrome, sepia, and duotones from grayscale images. In color images, it casts a different color for each of the shadows, midtones, and highlights; kind of like a souped-up version of White Balance for each!
- “MPA Judging Criteria” by Frank Gallagher followed by an interactive discussion of competition judging
We wrap the evening up with Photo Sharing. Send 1 or 2 of your images to share if you wish; this month’s theme is Open.

JANUARY FIELD TRIP
Current and prospective Club members assembled at Union Station to photograph iconic architecture in the area, before adjourning for lunch. Despite the frigid temps and wind, “a good time was had by all.”
BOARD MEETING
The SSCC Board last met in January. Minutes from all meetings can be found in the board meeting minutes archives when they have been finalized. February’s board meeting will be on the 22nd.

COMPETITION RESULTS
OPEN COMPETITION – January 11
December’s competition was Open for projected and print images. Bob Webber was our judge.
Three categories were judged: Advanced Projected (i.e., digital images), Novice Projected, and Advanced Print. Due to insufficient submissions, there was no Novice Print category. There were no Beginner entries. Awards are generally given for first, second, and third place, with the number of honorable mentions (HM) dependent on the total number of entries in the respective Advanced and Novice categories.

Will Rabinovich ~ Zombie Walk
The image was taken at this year's Silver Spring Zombie Walk. The most outstanding zombie there was Zombie Lucy. She was just absolutely amazing in makeup and also staying in character. But also great was the anti-Zombie lady who walked around railing against zombies. When the two of them got together, I couldn't resist grabbing a shot. Taken with a Sony A7riv with a 24 mm f/1.4 lens at 1.4 (it was dark). Some cropping and minor adjustments in Lightroom were applied.

The Future of Orchids: Conservation and Collaboration. The annual orchid exhibit put on by the US Botanic Garden will have 350 orchids, and will be located in the Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery, Eighth and G streets NW, January 28 through April 28, 2024.
