MICHAEL KOREN TO SPEAK ON “CELL PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY” ON APRIL 4
On April 4, our very own Michael Koren will speak on “Cell Phone Photography”. Michael is a free-lance sports and event photographer in the Baltimore Washington metro area specializing in youth sports game-time action and team portraits. Prior to this Michael worked professionally shooting model portfolios, corporate portraits, product photography for catalogs, and client advertising campaigns. (read more)
COMPETITION COLUMN
The competition on April 11 will be the Action/Motion topic:
The term “Action/Motion” encompasses images in which the depiction of movement is primarily what draws the attention of viewers to them. The movement may be large or small, fast or slow; but the constant is that the image conveys the impression that something in the camera’s field of view was in motion as the photographer clicked the shutter.
Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected images must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on April 4, Speaker Night, at the new email address: competition@ssccphotography.org ( read more here ).

A CLOSER FOCUS – APRIL 18

An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations
Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand. A half hour is devoted to presentations by members. And a half hour is set aside for member image reviews.
This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc. Or bring a gadget to share.
For April we will do another set of breakouts – this time camera operations! We will have a presentation on panoramic shooting and an introduction to competition judging. We will also have discussion topics and photo sharing:
- Camera Breakout Sessions: Bring in your camera, any accessories you want (e.g. flashes, triggers, intervalometers, … ), the manuals, and any other materials relating to their operation. We will break out onto several tables to discuss camera operations, taking advantage of the experienced users in the club. We will have a Nikon table, a Canon table, and others (e.g. Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Rolleiflex, Agfa, etc).
- Panorama Shooting: Dennis Freeman will provide a presentation on shooting panoramas. Presentation Here: How-to-Create-Panoramic-Images.pdf
- Introduction to Judging: Pete Morton (recent graduate of MPA Judging Program) will provide an introduction and overview of competition judging.
- Picture assignment: Bring in your action and motion photos to share and discuss. This is also our competition topic for the month, so grab some more for A Closer Focus when your going through your shots! If you don’t have any action/motion shots, bring in some other photos you’d like to share and discuss.
- Book/Gear Reviews: What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

Future topics of A Closer Focus include: compositional strength, HDR, or anything else photographic you want to bring to the table. This is an opportunity for you to provide input to the SSCC experience.

APRIL FIELD TRIPS
We have an April 13 trip to York, PA to the Haines Shoe House & Weightlifting Hall of Fame. We will tour a house built like a shoe! Then on to self-guided tour of history of strength sports. ( read more )
CLUB NEWS
YEAR END COMPETITION ENTRY DATES AND RULES
The Year End Competition is not about selecting the best entries for a single month, but rather selecting the best entries from the monthly competitions for the entire club year (September 2018 through May 2019). The results are announced at the Year End Celebration on June 13.
Send an email to SSCC Historian, Norm Bernache, at normbernache@comcast.net if you would like a list of all of your print and projected images submitted from September 2018 to April 2019.
As in other competitions, the judge will select first, second, and third place winners, and as many honorable mentions as the number of entries requires. There are no ribbons or points awarded; however, a Best in Show award will be presented, known as the Len Tuchin Award.
Be aware of the submission deadlines in May:
End of Year Competition Entry Schedule
- Print Deadline: Thursday, May 2 or May 9 – drop off at meeting
- Projected Deadline: Friday, May 10 (midnight) – via email
Each member may submit up to 5 projected and 5 print images from those that s/he entered in monthly club competitions this 2018-2019 season. Eligible submissions need not have won an award in the monthly competition(s) in which they were submitted. But please remember — images submitted for the year-end competition must be identical to those submitted in the regular season competitions and entries must be submitted in the same categories (print or projected) in which they were originally submitted.

THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT FUND
Its official name is the George DeBuchanne Community Service Project Fund, and it is the updated version of the Honor Fund. Its purpose is to award grants to club members to assist with a community-minded photography project. A key improvement in the new fund is that money is available all year long, so club members can apply for and receive a grant at any time. ( read more )
OP-ED: A CLOSER FOCUS
I would like to thank Dave Powell and David Blass for their contributions to last week’s A Closer Focus. Dave talked about the placement of photos in a series while David showed our group several useful ways to use layers for non-destructive photo processing. Both presentations got the group thinking differently about how we approach photography. I look forward to more presentations on these and other topics.
I highly encourage membership to join us each third Thursday of the month. We get an opportunity for group interactive learning. There is always a generous amount of community and laughter as we tackle new topics. If you have a personal problem with processing this is where you have a chance to ask questions about your particular concern. And, if you have a particular skill to share, this is the place to share it. Join us. We look forward to learning with you.

MARCH FIELD TRIP TO ANNMARIE SCULPTURE GARDEN NEAR SOLOMONS, MD
On March 17 SSCC went to the Annmarie Sculpture Garden near Solomons, MD, where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a walking path that meanders through the woods past permanent sculptures and over thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art.
Afterwards we went to lunch at the Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill next to Annmarie Sculpture Garden.

FEATURES
2019 PSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE
The 2019 Photographic Society of America Annual Conference will take place in Spokane, Washington between September 25 – 28, 2019, with tours starting in the morning of Sunday, September 22, and each day thereafter.
The conference includes three featured speakers, nine different tours offered over 18 opportunities, many talks and workshops, exhibition galleries, and a conference vendor area with conference prices. The tours are a big part of the conference and the highlight is the Palouse – both sunrise and sunset tours are offered. Past conferences have had early morning and evening informal photography walking tours from the conference hotel. You can literally have things to do all day every day if you have the energy!
Registration for the Spokane, Washington, conference begins Monday, April 1. Early bird pricing extends until May 31. The best tours sell out fast. Also, if you want to get special conference hotel convenience and pricing, sign up for that early, as well. (read more)
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY PARKS
What is the City Nature Challenge?
In April 2019, cities across the world will compete to see who can make the most observations of nature, find the most species, and engage the most participants. Observations are recorded in the iNaturalist app and contribute to important environmental research. Hundreds of people will go outside to look for nature in the Washington D.C. region. Anyone can participate, and Montgomery Parks is here to help you become a citizen scientist, too!
- Get Out and Find Nature. Nature is all around us, even in our cities! Go outside and find any wild plant, animal, or fungi. You can even look for signs animals have left behind, such as a track, shell, or feather. Observations may be collected from April 26 to 29, 2019.
- Take a Picture of What you Find. A picture records your observation for others to see. You may also want to note some additional details, such as distinctive features. Don’t forget to record the location of your critter, too.
- Share Your Observations. Upload your photo and any observation notes to iNaturalist. If you think you know the name of the species, you can identify your observation.
- Help Identify Observations. Observations become “research-grade” when species identifications are verified by another iNaturalist user. You may be able to help identify the species in observations submitted by others. Identifications must be made before May 5, 2019.
Details are on the Montgomery Parks’ 2019 City Nature Challenge link, and include requirements, a selection of training meetings, and a schedule of planned observation meetups include Brookside Nature Center, Locust Grove Nature Center, and Meadowside Nature Center.

Focus on the Story 2019 will bring together a community of photography lovers for a series of outstanding keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops, exhibits, portfolio reviews, photowalks and community events between May 29 – June 2 in the nation’s capital. Focus on the Story is a nonprofit organization with a mission to support and encourage photographers of diverse backgrounds to use visual storytelling to bring attention to critical issues, bridge cultural gaps and spark social change.
Festival registration includes all Keynote talks, panels and breakout sessions during the Friday through Sunday portion of the event. The announced speakers include Andrea Bruce, Lucian Perkins, Sharon Farmer, Xyza Cruz Bacani and Ibarionex Perello. They’ll be announcing more speakers, workshop instructors and photo walk leaders in the coming weeks. Learn more at Focus on the Story.

TED RINGGER FEATURED IN HARVARD’S ‘THE NEIMAN STORYBOARD’
Since 2011, SSCC member Ted Ringger has posted photos and stories on a blog called Images and More. It is listed among the ‘Member Websites’ on the club site. It began as a way to prompt him to learn and share aspects of digital photography (after decades of film shooting) but turned into more of a platform to share images, experiences and the occasional opinion.
The Neiman Storyboard is a publication of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard that showcases exceptional narrative journalism and explores the future of nonfiction storytelling.
The editor took a shine to a trio of Ted’s posts on where to look for photo ops and used them as a teaching exercise. Any of us who aspire to put words to our images might find the post interesting. See it here:

Real World ISO
I think it is a good idea to test your camera(s) to determine its useful ISO range. If you try reading about or YouTubing this stuff, it gets pretty deep in the weeds very quickly. To me, what matters is the deliverable image. My standard is a 16×20 print. Yours may be viewing on a tablet, computer screen, or a contest somewhere, in which case you need to know what the contest standards and requirements are… ( read more )

The importance of having a personal project in mind when going about a familiar shoot can make your photography more rewarding. … Setting a goal of a mini project or setting limitations could help. … The resulting limitation, whether it’s a specific subject or mechanical restriction will force you to see things in a new way … ( read more )

We grandparents were asked to bring young Henry to the hospital to meet his new little brother Freddie. All smiles and congratulations at first, then attention fell to the convalescing mother. I noticed Henry looking at Freddie and I think he was now realizing this was a life-changer: that he would no longer own the spotlight. I caught the moment with my iPhone.

Novice ~ Maude Svensson ~ Snow Hammock Test
The snow fell during the night, and the following morning the sun blessed us with its best shine. As the snow started to melt, some snowflakes became icy and transparent. With the intention to shoot snow formations on famous statues, I headed to DC with my camera but had only began my walk when I saw this hammock. As I love contrasts and have a funny sense of humor, it was just irresistible to me. I used my 15 mm Laowa lens.
