MEETING LOCATION
For the 2024-2025 club year, the second Thursday meeting of each month will be in person, at Northwood Presbyterian Church (https://www.northwoodchurch.com/). The address is 1200 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, Other meetings will be on Zoom. The in-person meeting will be Competition Night if the judge agrees, otherwise it will be Photo Forum and Competition Night will move to the third Thursday on Zoom.
SPEAKER NIGHT — Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.
Connie Imboden: The 50 year evolution of a photographer: dealing with creative blocks, developing intuitive seeing, and other key aspects of being a creative person
Connie Imboden’s photographs are in the permanent collections of many museums including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The National Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Bibliotheque Nationales in Paris, France, the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany and many other public and private collections throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Throughout the years, Imboden has shown her photographs in an extensive range of group and solo shows at galleries and museums within the United States, South America, Europe, and China.
In 1993, Connie Imboden won the Silver Medal in Switzerland’s “Schonste Bucher Aus Aller Welt (Most Beautiful Book in the World)” Award for her first book of images entitled “Out of Darkness”. In 1999, she released Beauty of Darkness”, featuring 80 images of her work produced between 1986 and 1998, with introductions by A.D. Coleman and Arthur Ollman. “Reflections, 25 Years of Photography”, highlights images from 1983 to 2009, charting Imboden’s artistic journey and offering new insights into her work and vision.
Throughout the years, Imboden has continued to teach and inspire colleagues and students alike in her quest to push the photographic medium to its highest level. She taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art for many years, and has also served as an instructor at many workshops around the world, including The Maine Photographic Workshops, NORD Photography in Norway, The International Center for Photography in New York City, the Center for Photography in Woodstock, Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in France, Union of Arab Photographers Workshop, Sharjah, U.A.E. and The Sante Fe Photographic Workshops.
Imboden is also the president of the board of governors of the William G. Baker Jr. Memorial Fund. The Baker Fund focuses its grant making exclusively to Arts and Culture and in 2008 initiated the Baker Artists Awards, an innovative online process offering significant prizes to emerging and established artists of any discipline.

COMPETITION COLUMN
Our October topic is Nature:
Acceptable entries are photographs that portray various aspects of natural plant and animal life; that illustrate the natural features of land, sea, and sky; or that reveal natural phenomena. No image in this competition may show human intervention. Domestic plants (e.g., in a botanical garden) or animals (including zoo animals) may be included as long as they do not show any human intervention (e.g., collars or ear tags, gates, walls, paths, signage).
Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition for the Projected competition. Look here for details on Projected submissions. Projected images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight (11:59 p.m.) on the day of the month’s Speaker Night.

- Maker’s Name: spaces allowed. Please use the same name throughout the year to aid record keeping.
Members may also submit up to two images meeting the definition for the Print competition. Look here (Section IV) for details on submissions. A label template for Print submissions may be found here.
One important detail – In order to participate in either competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.
As you may have heard, the Club has changed the competition levels starting in September 2024. The new levels are Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. To see a list of all 2023-2024 Club members with their tentative competition level assignments, separately for Projected and Print, click here. For details on what this change means for you, click here. October update: the calculations now include points won under the old competition categories Slides, Monochrome Prints, and Color Prints, as well as the current categories Projected and (Combined) Prints. Only a few members were affected by the change.
JUDGE MICHAEL OBERMAN – NATURE
Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
My interest in photography began when I was a music columnist at the Washington Star newspaper. Writing a weekly interview column for six years, I interviewed over 300 artists including Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, David Bowie, James Brown…a veritable Who’s Who of the music world. (A book of my interviews is currently in the works). There were times when there were no photographers available to accompany me on assignments…so I brought along my Nikon. Ten years ago, on a trip to New Mexico, I switched from film to digital photography.
My photographs are on permanent display in U.S. National Parks including Steigerwald and Modoc and in museums including the Utah Museum of Natural History and the Ontario Science Centre (Toronto).
Six of my photos were on a five year tour of U.S. and Canadian museums in an exhibit called “Imaginate”…under the auspices of the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto (where the same six photos are on permanent display).
My photographs have also appeared in publications including:

- The Baltimore Sun
- Motoring and Leisure (Great Britain)
- Why Men Make Bad Pets (book)

We will Start at the Lincoln Memorial (2 Lincoln Memorial Cir NW, Washington, DC 20002). This iconic monument is a must-see for any visitor to the nation’s capital. The memorial is open 24 hours a day and is free to visit.
Next, to the Korean War Veterans Memorial (900 Ohio Dr SW, Washington, DC 20024). This moving memorial commemorates the brave men and women who served in the Korean War. The memorial is open 24 hours a day and is free to visit.

CLUB NEWS
REVITALIZED FACEBOOK PRESENCE

As you’re probably aware, the Silver Spring Camera Club (SSCC) has had a dedicated Facebook (FB) Group for over eight years. The group currently has over sixty members. At the July meeting, the SSCC Board of Directors voted to “revitalize” our “FB Group Page” and create a brand new, separate “Facebook Page.”
What is the difference between a “Facebook Page” and a “Facebook Group?” “Facebook Page” is typically used for a business or organization to tell its story, reach new audiences, and promote its products and services. For example, a restaurant may have a Facebook Page to advertise its location, hours, menu, and contact information. A Facebook Page functions very similar to a website.
A “Facebook Group” is a special type of Facebook Page. It is intended for a group of people to connect around a shared interest to have online discussions and share resources, information, and ideas. Group members can share comments, images, and videos easily with other members of the group.
FB Group members are encouraged to share personal photos they have taken, such as during a vacation or other travel, or a photo they entered into a club contest, including those that did not win or place. Photos taken at SSCC events, such as field trips and club picnics, are encouraged as well. FB group members are invited to post information related to photography education, techniques, and equipment, along with any questions you would like to have answered by other group members.
You can access the SSCC FB Group on your computer by going to the Facebook website. You can also access the FB Group by smart phone or table by downloading the free Facebook App. It’s easy to join the SSCC Facebook Group. Just search for the Silver Spring Camera Club Group “Groups” on Facebook. When you find our group, click on “Join Group.” You will be prompted to answer three simple questions, and one of the FB Moderators will approve your request. New Occasional Feature: Phone Shot
Why and when do you take a photo with your phone instead of a big black camera? When another camera is not at hand? Do you capture certain stories in the moment easier? Do you accept the focal length limitations as an opportunity for compositional discipline? Revel in phone “magic” that is baked in?

I was at Artomatic in DC, in a multi-story office building. I happened to look out at a building across the street and saw a reflection I really wanted to capture; phone was the only option. In Lightroom I cropped, straightened, and squared up as well as I could.

OPEN COMPETITION – September 12, 2024
September’s competition was Open for projected and print images. Paul Biederman was our judge.
September was the first month with our new level of Intermediate. There were not enough entries in Advanced Prints, so those images were judged along with the Intermediate Prints. All three levels filled out the Prints category. Awards are generally given for first, second, and third place, with the number of honorable mentions (HM) dependent on the total number of entries in the respective Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice levels.

I was with a friend, birdwatching in Point Pelee National Park in Ontario. The park juts out into Lake Erie, and is a jumping off point for migratory birds and Monarch butterflies before they head out into the open waters of Lake Erie. We came upon this pair of boots as we hiked on a path in the park. There was no one else around. We were amused by this scene, and by the writing on the boots, "We love boys who recycle." I liked the colors—of the boots and the fallen leaves on the path.

Boston's North End has transformed remarkably in the past 50 years, Tenements and warehouses are now condos. The streets full of Italian delis, bakeries, pastry shops, greengrocers, wine stores, and fishmongers are now wall-to-wall Italian restaurants catering to a crush of tourists in the summer. Back in the 1970's, I remember a large wooden barrel of escargot, with the more brazen ones escaping down the sides. This shot is of one of the few, tiny delis left.
