SPEAKER ON OCT 3 – DON ROSENBERGER TO PRESENT: RUST AND RUINS

At 6:30 p.m., one hour before our regular meeting, SSCC will have a social hour! The SSCC Board will treat you to snacks and drinks while you socialize and catch up!

We are very pleased to have Don Rosenberger return as our guest speaker. Many photographers hold a certain fascination with decay and ruination. Perhaps they are drawn to the abstract qualities of a corrosive surface or find beauty within the walls of a crumbling building. Today, urban exploration is a very popular activity, but it can be difficult to do it legally.  Don will explore the risks and pitfalls of this type of photography as well as discuss how you can safely and legally add this type of photography to your portfolio. He will also explore why photographers are drawn to decrepitude and how to shoot this type of environment to get the results you desire . (Read More)

This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. • Presentation: David Blass will present “Arctic Adventure,  Exploring Svalbard Norway”.
  • Picture assignment:  Bring in your Nature Photography photos (e.g. you can include the ones you submitted to the October Nature competition for further feedback). If you’d prefer to talk about something else bring in some other photos you’d like to share and discuss.
  • Discussion: Any topics that you’d like to explore.
  • Book/Gear Reviews:  Andrew Rein will review his new Lumix FZ-1000 mirrorless camera. Dave Powell will review two books on ‘expanding your vision’. What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

DANGER BE DAMNED, GET THE SHOT – PROVIDED BY BRUCE SCHAEFER

This picture was taken by a National Geographic photographer. She dreamed about it and planned it out for months. What she and her group finally did to capture this moment is nothing short of heroic. [PS – the climber in the photo is also a woman.]

ROBERT FRANK TRIBUTE – PROVIDED BY BRUCE SCHAEFER

Robert Frank, the Swiss-born photographer who reshaped the medium of 20th-century documentary imagery, died September 9 at 94, 60 years after the American publication of his most famous book, “The Americans”. Looking once again through this dispassionate but unsettling survey of mid-century American consumerism, displacement and alienation — made during a two-year road trip across the country — will send shivers down your spine.

Parade – Hoboken, NJ

But the book was ultimately acclaimed as one of the most important photographic projects of the 20th century, a radical personalization of the documentary impulse into something haunted, bleakly poetic and daringly unsentimental.

78°N, 30°F. MY SUMMER VACATION IN THE ARCTIC – BY DAVID BLASS

Taking a warm weather vacation in the winter is pretty common for my wife, Karen, and I.  This summer, we did the reverse, and left sweltering Washington for a trip above the Arctic Circle.  We saw places that were unique (in our experience), stark, beautiful, remote, spectacular,  potentially dangerous and always fascinating. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: FACE TO FACE PHOTOGRAPHY

– By David W. Powell

For me, establishing personal contact with your potential subject is key. I walk right up and raise my camera as if to ask, “is this OK?” Depending on the response, I proceed. I have been refused only a few times in the 55 years I’ve been doing this. I am selective of whom I approach though. Attractive people usually enjoy attention from a professional appearing and acting photographer. Act your part. (Read More)

I shot this from the bell tower of the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, Spain, looking down onto the roof of the building, which is undergoing restoration work. As the name suggests, the structure was built originally as a mosque by the Spanish Moors and later, when the Christians captured the city, they built a cathedral right in the center of the mosque. One of the more beautiful and fascinating structures I've ever seen.

NOVICE PRINTS

  • 1st:    Karen Finkelman – Old Shoes
  • 2nd:   Renee Schaefer – Through the Bubble
  • 3rd:   Catherine Honigsberg – Weathered Wood
  • HM: Catherine Honigsberg – Waterman’s Workbench

This image was taken in Havana, Cuba. Our group was graciously invited into a private home when she spotted us taking photographs in the street. Her home was a virtual museum with brightly colored stucco walls that were decorated with old fashioned irons, trivets, antique wall clocks and few Backstreet Boy cassette tapes. It was a fascinating glimpse into the life of the more well-heeled Cubans. However, it was the old shoes I spotted resting against a wall in a corner of the living room which made it feel like a home to me. Canon 77D, Tamron 18-400mm lens @35mm, f/8; 1/25s; ISO 400.

ADVANCED PROJECTED

  • 1st:     Bob Catlett – Porch Post
  • 2nd:   Karen Finkelman – Track Lighting

A fun summer event for us is to pack up a picnic and drive out to Great Meadows in Virginia to enjoy an evening of arena polo. To be honest, I rarely watch any polo, but the people watching is always fun. From ladies with big hats to men with big cigars, it is always a photo op. On this evening, we attended the polo match with another couple from our camera club. I was standing near the announcers booth when I noticed a rider was visiting his family and friends between chukkas (quarters). I took several pictures of this interesting looking man dressed in full jockey regalia, but eventually singled in on this well worn boots. I liked the image that I made with the worn out boots and leading lines of the boardwalk.
