MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
As you can see, having navigated to this first issue of the year of the Cable Release, we now have a web-based newsletter! This new format has a number of big advantages over the previous hardcopy-compatible format when read with a digital device. Information that rarely changes is moving out of the newsletter and into the main website for the club and the Membership Handbook. What remains is primarily new material, results of the prior month’s competitions, and other items befitting a “newsletter”. You will see introductory paragraphs on the primary page leading into larger articles that exist on other pages. You can more quickly navigate to topics of interest without paging and re-paging through a serial magazine format. (read more)
KERNELS OF KOREN
Our president, Michael Koren, welcomes us back for the new year. He introduces many of the new things that you will experience in the club this year, from our new meeting space, new third and fourth Thursday topics, new Board members, and a dramatically improved bit of technology that you will really appreciate. EXPERT SPEAKER DENISE SILVA DISCUSSES PHOTOSHOP
Denise Silva
It is timely that we were able to schedule Denise Silva as our first speaker for the new photographic year on September 1. She is an expert in all things post-processing and Photoshop, and she will share her wisdom and ideas with us as we prepare our photos for the year’s competitions. More specifically, she will discuss the latest version of layers in Photoshop, and masks. Stephanie Banks provides us with this and more in the following full article about Denise. (read more)

LEW LORTON TO JUDGE OPEN TOPIC
Lew Lorton
Lew Lorton, our judge for September’s competition, is a serious people-photographer. He strives to bring emotional content and meaning into his photographs. Lew also is proficient in landscape and nature photography, providing an ideal wide-ranging perspective for this month’s open topic. SEMINAR NIGHT
Seminar Night is our new and improved third Thursday meeting of the month. Each month will offer on a rotating basis: 1) education, 2) discussion of photographic topics, and 3) hands on workshops. The first Seminar of the season will be an open photographic discussion. The main topic will be “Something I Learned this Summer”. This month we will have two radically different field trips to choose from, one to the Maryland Renaissance Festival on Labor Day (September 5), and the other to Great Falls, Virginia on September 24. Phil Boyer provides more details on both of these (read more).

END OF YEAR CELEBRATION – JUNE 9
The End of Year Celebration on June 9 was a huge success! We had a potluck dinner at Sligo – Dennis Avenue Park Activity Building and then handed out awards to recognize the year’s outstanding photographers. A Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Carl Brandt who has been a member from the beginning and held many leadership roles. Many attendees won fabulous raffle prizes! The relaxed atmosphere and easy circulation through the large space allowed members to socialize. Here are a few photos from our celebration:

SUMMARY – JUNE 20 BOARD MEETING
The Board met at the Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Spring, one of our last times there. The Board voted to accept a proposed Competition Rule Change, approved new chair positions, and voted to purchase a new upgraded projector. A number of other topics were also discussed. (read more)
MAY 28 FIELD TRIP TO LONGWOOD GARDENS
On May 28, five SSCC members went to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania to photograph water lilies and other attractions. See the following article for more information and to see a set of twelve very nice pictures from the many more taken (read more).

DOUG WOLTERS’ SOLO EXHIBIT OPENS SEPTEMBER 6
Doug Wolters – Flying Echinacea
Months ago, a panel of judges juried Doug in for an intriguing multi-media art show at Glenview Mansion in Rockville. With an open call to artists from Virginia, DC, and Maryland, the final selection for the exhibit features printmaking, art installations, mixed media – and Doug as the only photographer. The focus of the show is on abstracts. (read more).
SSCC MEMBERS TAKE AWARDS IN JOSEPH MILLER’S 6TH ANNUAL ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
The 6th Annual Joseph Miller Photography Exhibit was held at the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts in Gainesville, Virginia during the month of May. The Silver Spring Camera Club (SSCC) was well represented in the exhibit with abstract photos by Beth Koller, Elise Shurie, Kate Woodward, Nick Williams, Doug Wolters, and David Terao. COCO STEPS DOWN
After five years as SSCC Program Chairman, Coco Simon has stepped down from her position. During her tenure, she was responsible for securing guest speakers every month as well as judges for every monthly competition. In addition to Coco’s role as Program Chairman, she served as an active SSCC board member and contributed significantly to numerous club innovations.
Coco takes this opportunity to look back at her many contributions, and tells us what she will focus her talents on now. (read more)
SSCC MEMBER WINS BEST IN SHOW AT FREDERICK CAMERA CLIQUE EXHIBIT
For the past 30 years, the Frederick Camera Clique has hosted its annual juried exhibition open to all photographers from the region. The exhibit showcases a full range of photographic subject matter that can be captured by a camera including landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, travel, people, street photography, sports, macro, abstract, fine art, and wildlife. This year’s exhibition—held July 9 through September 7—displayed 64 framed photos at the Mary Condon Hodgson Gallery at Frederick Community College, 7932 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. http://www.frederickcameraclique.org/annual-juried-exhibit/

A LITTLE WALK IN ENGLAND BY STEPHANIE BANKS
Sheep Grazing on Moors
According to tradition, coast to coast trekkers place their boot in the Irish Sea, pick up a small pebble from the beach, carry it almost 200 miles to the North Sea, and thrust it into same. The custom celebrates their completion of the walk from St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, west to east across England. All you need are suitable clothes and boots, a day pack, food and water, and determination. (read more)

Our club is an organizational member of the Photographic Society of America (PSA), a worldwide, non-profit organization for photographers of all skill levels “to learn, share, compete, and enjoy photography more.“ PSA also offers memberships to individuals. Kate Woodward provides us with a wide variety of photography courses and workshops from a variety of providers in her column. She has even included a source of online courses.
