John Telford knows he is not a natural artist. His B.S. in Mathematics and M.S. in Mathematical Statistics should prove that. However, after 50 years of left-brained analytical pursuits, he began an adventure of self-discovery in photography, following his interest in classical landscape photographs.
He began taking local college courses, reading books, and attending photography workshops. In 1993 he joined the SSCC camera club; his photography improved. He joined the North Bethesda Camera Club where he competed for 7 years, winning “Slide Photographer of the Year” for 5 consecutive years, a record that still stands.
Fishing and camping with his father at an early age left him with a love of nature and the outdoors, and his photographs show it. He has conducted photography workshops at Acadia, Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Glacier, and Grand Teton national parks. His photographs have been exhibited at Brookside Garden, Glenview Mansion, the Rockville Arts Place, and the Art Center of Estes Park, Colorado, in a national juried exhibit. They have appeared in a book titled Barns Across America, a calendar published by the U.S. Capitol Historical Society, several calendars published by Stephenson Printing, Inc., and Nature’s Best Magazine.
Retired since 2003, he splits his time between Maryland and Mexico, following the good weather. Although preferring to be a no-name nobody, making a great photograph or seeing one by a former student still thrills him. We welcome John back to SSCC and hope to learn much from his experience.
