JANUARY 2 SPEAKER NIGHT WITH JOSEPH ROSSBACH – CREATIVE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY: COMPOSITION, LIGHT AND PERSPECTIVE
We are thrilled to begin the new year with professional photographer and author, Joseph Rossbach.
In tonight’s presentation, Joe will discuss how he uses composition, use of natural light and unique perspectives to create amazing landscape images that are filled with power, emotion and balance as illustrated by many of his most famous images from Death Valley, Patagonia, Iceland, Rocky Mountains, the Colorado Plateau and beyond. Our January topic is Cityscapes:
The topic “Cityscapes” encompasses images that show aspects of an urban, city environment. The subjects may be animate or inanimate and the field of view may be anywhere along the spectrum from wide angle to close-up. But regardless of whether the field of view is macro or micro, a cityscape image will reveal something to the viewer that is recognizable as distinctly urban.
Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected images must be received no later than 11:59 pm, January 2nd. The images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org (One important detail – In order to participate in the competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)

JOHN HOOVER – JUDGE, JANUARY 9 CITYSCAPES COMPETITION
On Thursday, January 9, John Hoover will judge the Cityscapes competition.
John is the Instructional Lab Coordinator for Photography at Montgomery College in Rockville. He also works as a freelance and assignment photographer specializing in portraits, travel, and architectural photography. (Read More)
A CLOSER FOCUS – JANUARY 16

An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations
Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand. A half hour is devoted to presentations by members. And a half hour is set aside for member image reviews.
This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc. Or bring a gadget to share.
- Presentations:
- Norm Bernache will present “Flash Portrait Photography”
- Dave Powell will present “An Introduction to Lens Baby Lenses”
- Picture assignment subjects: Cityscapes, or anything else you’d like to share. Bring in prints or laptop/tablet digital images for display on our table in back. We will share, discuss, and critique.
- Discussion: Any topics that you’d like to explore.
- Book/Gear Reviews: Dennis Freeman will review his Peak Design Camera Bags. What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

JANUARY FIELD TRIPS
January 12 Field Trip to B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore
Our first field trip of the month will be to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore on Sunday, January 12.
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum possesses the oldest, most historic and most comprehensive American railroad collections in the world. Dating from the beginning of American railroading, the collection contains locomotives and rolling stock, historic buildings, and small objects and includes the finest collection of 19th century steam locomotives. January 19 Field Trip to Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
On Sunday, January 19 we will be going to the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA, the second Air & Space Museum location. Hundreds of aircraft and spacecraft are on display in two massive hangars, including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, and the Space Shuttle Discovery. (Read More)

DECEMBER 5 WINTER SOCIAL
Our December 5 Speaker Night (with Burke Seim’s excellent presentation on the State of the Camera Industry) was preceded by our Winter Social. There were lots of great snacks, desserts, and drinks, and people enjoyed chatting for an hour. Thanks to everyone that participated! Norm Bernache and Bruce Schaefer provided some photos:
FIELD TRIPS
On December 7, SSCC went to photogenic Georgetown for street photography. Ilona Linnoila shares a number of her photos from that trip:
On Sunday, December 19, SSCC went to the National Zoo to see the ZooLights. More than 500,000 LED lights transform the Zoo into a winter wonderland. New this year were dozens of large, glowing animal lanterns and thousands of reflecting lights as part of the interactive art exhibit called “Entre Les Rangs.” Tanya Riseman provides several photographs:

PHOTO CHALLENGE: “WORDS AND IMAGES”
As in past years, this month’s Cable Release includes our winter photo challenge with the theme “Words and Images”, where club members sent in pairings of words with images. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this year’s submissions!
To kick it off, enjoy Wendy Kates’ creative video entry. In July, Wendy photographed the tribute to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, which was projected onto the Washington Monument. CALL FOR ENTRIES: SPECIAL TENTH ANNIVERSARY JOSEPH MILLER ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
The Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts is announcing its tenth annual juried abstract exhibit. All interested photographers are invited to submit entries for this much anticipated spring event. The exhibition will occur May 2 – May 25, 2020.

The deadline for submissions will be Saturday, February 22, 2020.

6TH ANNUAL ALLEGANY NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION – APRIL 4 – MAY 2, 2020
November 2018’s SSCC judge, Martin Heavener, told us about the nearby Allegany National Photography Competition & Exhibition and it’s fabulous prizes: $$$. CRYSTAL CITY FOTOWALK UNDERGROUND EXHIBITION
Exposed DC is proud to partner with the Crystal City Business Improvement District and JBG Smith for the Fotowalk exhibitions in the Crystal City Underground. We’ve produced seven exhibitions there since 2016, including our latest which features 64 local photographers whose images take us on a virtual road trip throughout the United States of America.
The exhibit will be on display through early 2020. More information, including a map and the participating photographers and examples of their work can be seen HERE.
RICHARD MOSSE EXHIBITION “INCOMING” AT NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART
If you are interested in photojournalism, camera technique, politics, human rights, fine art, contrasts, etc., the Richard Mosse exhibition at the NGA is extremely rewarding. The exhibition is a marriage between photography, film and sound with a 50 minutes long video reflected on three large screens at the East Building. It will run until March 22, 2020.

2020 PSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE – AKA 2020 PSA PHOTO FESTIVAL
The Photographic Society of America is planning next year’s annual conference for Sept. 29 – Oct. 3, 2020 in Colorado Springs. It will include daily tours and informal morning/evening photo walks, workshops, exhibitions, vendors, keynote speakers, and lots of presentations. Past tours were terrific, and the ones from the 2020 Colorado Springs Photo Festival will be no exception.

MEMBER ARTICLES
LENS CAST CORRECTION – BY KEN
I originally started writing about infrared photography. However as I was doing the article, I noticed that part of my workflow is very dependent on LCCs. Therefore, my first article will be on LCCs. What is an LCC? It stands for “Lens Cast Correction”. It is very useful for:
- Color correction caused by filters.
- Dust spot removal.
- Color correcting from horrible light sources or reflected colors.
- Making pictures that have even exposure for photo-merging for panoramics.
- Making pictures that have even exposure when using tilt or shift lenses.

KERNELS OF KOREN
Usually this time of year thoughts turn to resolutions and goals for the coming year. They’re nice to think of and plan for but I’m thinking more of the past year. I’m looking back on my photography accomplishments and things I wish I had done. Happily, for me the list of accomplishments far outweighs what I haven’t done. REFLECTIONS COMPETITION – DECEMBER 12
December’s competition was in the Reflections theme. Janet Little Jeffers was our judge that evening.
There were four main categories: Advanced Prints, Novice Prints, Advanced Projected (i.e. digital images), and Novice Projected. Awards are given for first, second, and third place, and multiple honorable mentions (HM) – the number of awards depends on the total number of entries in the category.
