COMPETITION RESULTS
February’s competition was High Key/Low Key, for projected images only. Lori Lankford was our judge. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the competition was held remotely over Zoom.
There were two categories judged: Advanced Projected (i.e. digital images) and Novice Projected. No Beginner Projected images were submitted. The Print categories are suspended until we start in-person meetings again. Awards are given for first, second, and third place, and multiple honorable mentions (HM) – the number of awards depends on the total number of entries in the category.

Bob Catlett and I were checking out Huntley Meadows. On our way out, no more than a couple hundred yards from the parking lot, we saw this little girl plop down in the middle of the trail. She was done for the day. Period. No cajoling by her mother would help. I took a couple of shots. One a wider angle, the next one lower and closer. Her mother and I spoke--and the girl remained affixed to the trail. The tonality of the original image was light--with a blue grey sweater and blond hair. It made for an easy conversion to high key in black and white—although I paid particular attention to the red and yellow channels to avoid having her light brown eyes become too dark. Then I cropped it a bit tighter (deliberately leaving the complete zipper tab in place) to make the viewer focus on that pleading pout.
