An internet search led new SSCC member Lwenyi Nokonko to discover SSCC’s Meetup page. But she has pursued photography on and off since childhood. Lwenyi requested, and received, her first camera as a Christmas gift when she was 11 or 12 years old. At the time, Lyenyi had a stamp and coin collection, and she wanted to “document” her collection by photographing it. Since that time, Lyenyi’s interest in photography has waxed and waned, and she has not pursued photography as a hobby for a few years. But now, she finds that she has the time to become more involved in photography, and she has joined SSCC as part of her effort to rekindle that interest.
Lwenyi is still exploring which subjects will be the focus of her current interest in photography. Previously, nature was her favorite photographic pursuit. As a teenager, Lwenyi lived in Singapore, where her father was a linguistics professor at University of Singapore. Lwenyi recalls that during that time, she would visit Singapore’s long-established botanical garden, where she spent hours photographing swans, flowers, ponds, goldfish and plants.
Now Lwenyi is interested in exploring opportunities to take pictures in a range of different settings. To that end, she has recently purchased a Nikon D3400 DSLR camera.
By day, Lwenyi is a therapist at a mental health clinic in DC. But she is planning to spend her Thursday evenings participating in meetings at SSCC, where she hopes to develop and hone her photographic skills. Eventually, she is interested in becoming more involved with SSCC membership and competitions. For now though, Lwenyi states “I’m excited to be a part of SSCC, and look forward to learning and growing as a photographer!”
Please extend a warm SSCC welcome to Lwenyi Nokonko!
