Kat Forder has graciously agreed to judge our October Nature competition. Kat was among a group of accomplished photographers who reviewed member portfolios in May. Her comments were enthusiastically received. Kat is a member of the National Press Photographers Association, a leading voice advocating for the work of visual journalists today, with over 6,500 members. She graduated with a Digital Photographers Certificate from Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Art, which also engages in important research on the ways media affect our lives. She owns a studio outside Baltimore.
Her career began as a photojournalist. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including The Washingtonian, Ottawa Citizen, Esquire Magazine, and in several books and blogs. Kat also teaches at local universities as well as through her own studio.
She brings a varied skill set and background to her judging. Her experience as a photographer helps shape her sense of composition, storytelling, and informs her opinion on the mass appeal of an image. Her formal education in the field influences her knowledge of the technical difficulty of an image. During her career as a working photographer, she has refined her opinion of the commercial viability of an image. She would analyze and judge a nature image based on the emotion and story it evokes, as well as the technical proficiency and mastery it illustrates.
