Near Our Backyards – by Lisa Auerbach

We are from Texas where it can take 8 hours just to get to the state line so I have come to appreciate that in only 2 hours you can cross several state lines from where we now live in Maryland.

Last week, we drove through Pennsylvania to Chadd’s Ford, Delaware.  While in Pennsylvania, we ventured through Kennett Square, a quaint town with nice shops and people.  There were signs about town for a mushroom race.   I learned that Kennett Square is an American mushroom capital.  The shop keeper told the story of two Quaker flower growers who thought of growing mushrooms. They went to Europe, where people were already farming mushrooms, and brought back spores. They were Kennett Square’s original mushroom farmers, and some of their descendants  are still in the business today.

A highlight of the trip was to the Brandywine River Museum of Art.   I looked at the art with a photographer’s eye and felt a new appreciation for  some of the rules we use in photographic composition.  Outside the museum is a winding path along the Brandywine River.  It is perfect for a stroll full of nature photography opportunities.

On the way home, a different map route presented a vineyard, farms, and a covered bridge.

This was a short overnight drive filled with lovely opportunities.  I’d like to know of other nearby trips some of you have taken.

Amish country! Head for Intercourse, PA, then drive randomly around the countryside on the back roads. You’ll never hit a dead end and you WILL encounter Amish images you absolutely have to capture. Horse buggies, girls on scooters, looong clothesline’s, covered bridges- Norman Rockwell stuff!
