Photographer Alex Keto will be closing out the season as our monochrome competition judge. Dave and I met Alex at a local exhibit, where he spent time with us describing his techniques and the visual arrangements in his images. Then we enjoyed a stroll through his amazing photos.
Alex started his career in photography as a reporter for The Oak Ridge newspaper in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. While working there, Alex learned the process of shooting and developing techniques. Working in black and white film provided him with a foundation for his later work. Once digital cameras began to rival film, he switched to digital and to what is known as the electronic darkroom. He continues to learn new processing methods, many of which he develops himself.
Alex received his formal artistic training at Yale, where he received a BA in art. He has also studied drawing at the Corcoran School of Art and sculpture at American University. While a teenager, Alex studied stone carving under the guidance of Constantine Seferlis, a stone carver at the National Cathedral.
He is a featured artist at the Susan Calloway Fine Arts Gallery in Washington, D.C. He has exhibited at Strathmore and at the Artists and Makers II studio.
