On February 16 Terry Popkin is making his second appearance as our competition judge since 2014.
He expresses his passion for and philosophy of photography quite elegantly. He believes that creativity is the basis of both fine art and fine photography. It is essential that he not only be an expert craftsman, but imaginative and caring, eliciting feeling and memories forever.
He has enjoyed over 40 years as a commercial photographer, creating exquisite portraits and landscapes. He has photographed over 1,000 weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other events across the United States and internationally. His photographs and articles on photography have been published worldwide in books and magazines and on magazine covers. He was assigned to photograph all the firearms at the NRA Museum in Fairfax, Virginia, which led to a publication of his images in The History of Firearms and Treasures of the NRA Museum. His studio in Silver Spring includes the finest traditional and digital imaging equipment.
He holds a doctorate in microbiology. He became interested in electron microscopy and dedicated his efforts specializing in photographic applications. He retired from the National Institutes of Health in 1992 and began to devote his life to photography, specializing in travel, portraiture and event photography. His expertise in biomedical photography led to an interest in fine art photography.
