Crystal City Fotowalk Underground 2019-2020

Exposed DC is proud to partner with the Crystal City Business Improvement District and JBG Smith for the Fotowalk exhibitions in the Crystal City Underground. We’ve produced seven exhibitions there since 2016, including our latest which features 64 local photographers whose images take us on a virtual road trip throughout the United States of America.

The exhibit is organized by approximate location. Starting by the metro, you will travel from Virginia north into New England before heading west toward Washington, then south to California and back east toward Florida and back up toward Virginia, with some detours to places like Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico along the way.

An opening reception was held on Friday, October 4, 2019 to celebrate the new exhibition at Gallery Underground as part of First Fridays in Crystal City from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through early 2020.

It is an easy walk from the Metro to the Fotowalk, all underground. Its best to enjoy this during non-commute hours (e.g. the weekend)! Its pretty empty when people aren’t commuting.

The following map identifies the Fotowalk area of the Underground as #8, south of 20th St. The Crystal City Metro stop is also identified near #1. Solid red lines are outside, while dashed red lines are underground. The Metro icon shows the outside entrance on the map. The train platforms are actually on the opposite side of the red line, underneath the words “CRYSTAL CITY”.

This map shows a circuit walk that you may or may not want to do. You can skip the excursion outside from #1 to #11, going directly from #1 to #9 instead. From the Metro trains, come up the escalator and immediately turn left through the glass doors into a wide hallway. Proceed down a few steps and jog left. This jog is under 18th St on the map. You then enter a long southbound hallway that passes the Synectic Theater (labeled #9 on the map). Go straight and enter the Fotowalk, at #8. This is an ‘L’ shaped hallway/gallery. Framed photos will be on both sides of the hallway, and you will follow the gallery until you pop out at the intersection shown on the map – with a bakery, an intriguing high-tech art fabrication studio, and stores.
